Experience Science and Art in a New Light

Discover a groundbreaking anthology that bridges the worlds of fiber art, poetry, and scientific understanding.

Born from the captivating exhibits at the Annual Geophysical Union meetings, this unique collection, co-edited by Dr. Kathleen P. Decker, Dr. Laura Guertin, and Betsy Wilkening, invites you to explore the unseen forces shaping our planet.

Since 2021, Dr. Guertin and Betsy Wilkening have been masterfully blending fiber art with critical scientific topics like global warming, climate change, and environmental threats, all while offering potential solutions. In 2024, Dr. Decker proposed an innovative expansion: a multimodal ekphrastic project that pairs powerful poetry with evocative art.

This book is the stunning result. You'll find a diverse array of artwork—from exquisite fiber art quilts to compelling drawings, paintings, and even museum pieces—each carefully selected to illuminate the theme of "making the unseen, seen" and to forge a powerful connection between science and art through the medium of poetry.

We strongly encourage you to delve into the Artist/Scientist Statements at the back of the book. These illuminating insights provide brief, accessible explanations that enhance the thoughtful poems, making complex scientific topics relatable and engaging for everyone.

It has been a true joy to bring this project to life. We hope you'll return to these pages again and again, discovering new layers of meaning with each reading.

Take advantage of a quiet Sunday to fall in love with Road Trip. You will wish you were the traveler. See, through Sharon Canfield Dorsey’s travel journal, a romance filled with endless treasures spread far and wide, shared with the light of her life. Live, love, and learn with Sharon and Don. This little gem tugs at your heartstrings. ROAD TRIP is a love story about two people who found each other late in life and embarked on a grand adventure to explore America. In their twenty years of gypsying around the country, they also fell in love with our land – its towering mountains, sparkling creeks, and good-hearted people. AMERICA, the beautiful, the generous, the stubborn, the strong, the fragile…you’ll find it all in ROAD TRIP. Come along! Adventure and fun await you around every curve in the road. Sharon met the love of her life when he had just retired from thirty-one years in the Air Force which included many overseas tours, including the war years of Vietnam. She was divorced, working long hours toward a promotion that could make me financially independent for the rest of my life. But to get there, Sharon would have to be nose to the grindstone for at least five more years. Don was fourteen years her senior. He knew time was of the essence. His argument was… “We are so lucky to have found each other. Let’s run and play and see as much of the country and world as we can while we’re healthy enough to do all the things we want to do. We don’t know what five years of waiting and working will bring. Let’s grab this moment.” What would you have done?

Sharon packed her gypsy bags and never looked back. Time gives and time takes away. It is her hope this book will inspire you to trade time for experiences.
